Marine and Coastal Protection Areas of Ireland

Marine and coastal protection areas are essential to protect, secure and enhance the marine and coastal environment of Ireland. They will reseed, replenish and restock near exhausted marine species. SAC’s and SPA’s are limited in the protection they can provide. To fulfill Ireland’s commitment to establishing Marine Protection Areas under the OSPAR convention, to protect the marine environment and biodiversity of the N.E. Atlantic, there is a need to identify and establish “no take zones” with full legal protection, whilst encouraging, promoting and nurturing sustainable local economic activity.

The goals of the Marine and Coastal Protection Areas of Ireland initiative are:

1). To implement a two year scientific research program to identify potential marine and coastal protection areas.

2). To implement a public, political and industry education and awareness program. (See MCS for the model in the UK).

3). To establish a network of marine and coastal protection areas.

4). To develop a website to deliver effective internet and social media marketing. Rallying and uniting environmental groups in Ireland.

5). To develop sustainable employment programmes for coastal communities.

6). To develop a permanent operational base for MCPA Ireland.

MCPA Ireland relies on membership subscription and sponsorship.
